business news in context, analysis with attitude

Tesco, the number one UK retailer, has accused Sainsbury of sending money-off vouchers to households in which they are engaged in tough competition, and has said that it will now accept Sainsbury vouchers in its own stores.

According to Sainsbury, Tesco’s reaction isn’t so much a concern about the vouchers as it is an illustration of the company’s worries about Sainsbury's new Nectar loyalty card, a joint venture with several non-food retailers that seems to have been a raging success in signing up UK shoppers.
KC's View:
Of all retailers, we don’t understand why Tesco would complain about what seems like a simple, hard-nosed competitive ploy by Sainsbury. After all, that’s the game Tesco has been playing for years.

It’s what keeps the UK market son interesting.
