As the United States threatens to bring the European Union (EU) before the World Trade Organization (WTO) because of its moratorium on genetically modified organisms (GMOs), debate continues among the EU member nations about how their rules should be structured.
The Associated Press reports that Austria, Denmark, France, Greece, Italy and Luxembourg have said that they will maintain a moratorium unless labeling and traceability rules are enforced.
The European Commission wants a one percent threshold for labeling, with only products containing less than one percent GMOs exempt from labeling requirements.
The European Parliament likes the idea of a zero percent threshold.
The US has suggested that a five percent threshold might be more acceptable.
And, according to the AP, France reportedly wants whatever threshold is enforced to apply even to pet food.
