According to a new study,39 percent of the US population uses organic products, generating $6.9 billion in annual food and beverage sales. Expectations are that this usage will continue to grow, especially because of new US Department of Agriculture (USDA) rules about labeling of organics.

Usage of organics is fairly evenly split into three main groups:

• People who integrate organics into their everyday lives, with heavy usage on a daily basis, accounting for 37 percent of organics users;

• The middle group, 39 percent of the total, which uses organics at least once a week;

• Fringe users, 24 percent of all organics users, who use such products "occasionally."

The study also suggests that just 48 percent of consumers understand the true meaning of "organic," which sounds like a terrific marketing opportunity to us.
