The Des Moines Register reports that US Department of Agriculture (USDA) Secretary Ann Veneman has said that the Bush administration will push for a “strong and credible regulatory system” that will prevent biotech crops from contaminating the food supply,

While Veneman would not reveal specifics, she promised legal action against companies that violate USDA regulations in this area.
KC's View:
Two things are equally important, in our view. One is to regulate this area closely so that there is no cross-contamination. The other is to make sure that legitimate research and development in the biotech area continues unabated. The report earlier this week that scientists at Cornell university have come up with a strain of rice that can stand up to drought and other adverse weather conditions seems like ample evidence of the importance of this area of research.
