business news in context, analysis with attitude

Wal-Mart has decided to withdraw a court order that sought to identify who leaked information about Thanksgiving sale prices weeks before the holiday, with a listing of the prices ending up on several web sites.

The company was one of several retailers that had their sale information leaked, conceivably giving other retailers advance notice about pricing policy. Wal-Mart and other retailers also had threatened legal action against the web sites if they persisted in keeping the information online – which they did not, being small web businesses that couldn’t afford to go up against Wal-Mart’s legal apparatus.
KC's View:
We’ve always thought this is much ado about nothing…that Wal-Mart and the other retailers gave these web sites credibility when they threatened legal action.

It’s also a lesson about the growing power of the Internet.
