MNB received word yesterday that the hot rumor spreading in the Texas Tom Thumb stores is that HEB may acquire those units from Safeway by mid-February.

No way to gauge the accuracy of this rumor over a holiday, but we mention it because it suggests the morale issues that may be at play in Safeway’s Texas stores. Clearly, the company has had its problems in Pennsylvania (Genuardi’s) and Chicago (Dominick’s), and there have been persistent rumblings about similar goings-on at Tom Thumb.
Management has thus far said it doesn’t comment on rumors.
We’ll be anxious to see how this develops.
