The Times of London reports that Tesco, the UK’s number one retailer, is considering a bid for 64 small Safeway units that qualify as convenience stores.

If Tesco were to make such a move, it would complicate efforts to acquire all of Safeway by Sainsbury, Wal-Mart’s Asda Group, and Wm Morrison.

Okay, we were wrong. We figured that there was no way that Tesco could get into the bidding.

But this story just keeps getting more and more intriguing.
