business news in context, analysis with attitude

The Financial Times reports that Tesco, the UK’s biggest supermarket chain, plans to start offering residential fixed line phone services.

Tesco CEO Sir Terry Leahy told FT, “Customers tell us they want a more convenient way to lower their phone bills. Because we think like retailers, not like a utility company, we will give customers supermarket-style offers; and a simple alternative to the 'lock-in' contracts and complex billing systems that they hate."

So maybe it works this way…every other supermarket chain in the UK fights over Safeway, with Tesco juicing things up by submitting its own bid…and meanwhile, Tesco builds up other pieces of its business strategy.
