The San Jose Business Journal reports that there have been almost 5,000 acquisitions or shutdowns of Internet companies in the three years since the peak of the so-called “dot-com frenzy.”

This adds up to enormous consolidation for a still young business. The cycles are faster, and steeper, and less predictable that old-world business cycles.
But it is critical to keep in mind for the future that there’s no such things as “only up.” There will be rises and falls, but the dot-come economy is, in our view, here to stay.
