Dow Jones reports that Belgian retailer Delhaize Group is considering a broad expansion into Germany, as it evaluates a single store that it opened in Aachen, a German city just across the Belgian border.

The move comes as Delhaize said it is “weathering” tough competition in its home Belgian market from the likes of Lidl and Aldi, which have been undercutting the retailer on price, as well as French giant Carrefour.

The Netherlands, however, is considered off-limits for Delhaize, since Ahold dominates there with much the same format.

On the other hand, this makes you wonder about the possibilities if Ahold’s legal situation gets worse, not better. Could there be an Ahold in Delhaize’s future?
