- Walgreen Co. posted April sales of $2.77 billion, up from $2.4 billion a year ago. Same-store sales were up 10.8 percent, while pharmacy sales were up 14.7 percent.
Fiscal year-to-date sales increased 13.2 percent to $21.4 billion. Fiscal year-to- date same-store sales rose 8.1 percent.
- Publix Supermarkets reported that first quarter profits were off 4.1 percent, from $195.2 million in 2002 to $187.1 million this year. Sales, however, were up three percent compared to the first quarter a year ago, reaching $4.3 billion, compared with last year's $4.2 billion.
Same store sales, however, were down 2.3 percent from a year ago.
