Dale Riley, the former president/COO of Byerly’s as well as a senior executive with Kowalski’s and Rainbow Foods, announced yesterday that he is launching his own store – Fresh Seasons Market, a 25,000 square foot independent store that he says “will offer local residents upscale quality and service at affordable pricing in a store where one of the employees’ primary goals will be to know their customers.”
The space reportedly will include an abundant produce department, a full-service deli, a comfortable seating area for eating in, a full-service meat and seafood department and a full service drug and pharmacy. Natural and organic offerings will play a significant role, as will locally grown, seasonal produce.
In addition, Riley is developing partnerships with several area companies - among them with Brown & Greene Floral Market – which Riley believes lend immediate credibility and value to customers who are time-starved yet anxious to enjoy brands they know and respect. “The exciting thing about being a smaller organization is that we can truly get involved in our community. We want to partner with local organizations at the same time that we’re simplifying our customers’ daily needs for food and helping them plan the special events in their lives – from holiday dinners to graduations to baby showers. Food is part of everyday life…that’s what Fresh Seasons Market wants to be.”
Riley has two partners in the effort: local developer Tom Wartman, and Tim Meyerson, principal of MainStreet Real Estate Advisors and former Supervalu director of real estate assets. The store, in the Twin Cities neighborhood of Glen Lake, is slated to open in November. The company is said to be reviewing opportunities for additional locations.

We’ve known Dale Riley for years, and think the world of him. It is exciting to see independent retailers still willing to get into the game, to create compelling retail environments that they believe will offer consumers a differential advantage.
We look forward to visiting Fresh Seasons and seeing what he’s up to.
