The American Bakers Association (ABA) has asked the US Food and Drug Administration (FDA) to extend by six months the January 2006 deadline for labeling trans fats on food products.

The ABA said it was requesting the delay – or, at the very least, six months of during which the rules would not be enforced – because of a resin shortage caused by recent hurricanes. Resin is used in the creation of new packaging, and the ABA says that its members have been unable to meet demand because of the shortage.
