David F. Sobey, the former president and CEO of the company that was founded by his father and that bore the family's name, has passed away. He was 92. Sobey's Inc,. which is owned by Canadian conglomerate Empire, has grown to more than 1,500 stores with annual sales of more than $30 billion.
The CBC reports that Sobey "served as chairman and CEO of Sobeys Inc. from 1986 to 1995, and chairman from 1995 until his retirement in 2001. He remained on the board of Empire until 2015.
"Sobey was also known for his philanthropy, in particular his enduring association with St. Mary's University in Halifax, home of the Sobey School of Business, and the David Sobey Centre for Innovation in Retailing and Services."
