Residents of multiple communities in southern Maine remain under shelter-in-place orders this morning as authorities hunted for a man who killed at least seven people at a bowling alley and bar in Lewiston, about 30 miles north of Portland.

Dozens of other people reportedly were wounded, though the casualty numbers remained in flux - some reports say that 16 people were killed and 50 were injured.  Regardless, it is expected to be the largest mass shooting in Maine's history.

Police said they continued to hunt the perpetrator, an experienced gun owner who was caught on camera carrying a military-style semiautomatic rifle.  They said he should be considered armed and dangerous.

This story continues to be updated in the media as authorities grapple with both the number of casualties and the manhunt for someone who reportedly has both gun and survival skills.

The Gun Violence Archive says that this is the 565th mass shooting in the US this year.

Which is an Eye-Opener.  It seems clear that this can happen anyplace at anytime.
